Cropped Tee’s Summer 08/09

I saw something horrible in my latest issue of Cosmopolitan. Not so much horrible, but deathly terryfying, some fashion quack decided to bring the midriff tops back. I remember back to an era of girl power and being convinced I was going to date a backstreet boy my mother pulling down my tube top in disgust of my exposed belly. I think she was onto something. For those who spent winter months working on their abs to achieve a washboard stomach it may be a blessing the midriff tops making a comeback, but to us mere mortals who chose tortelllini over the gym most days are most likely dreading this. Maybe this is designers way of really being able to distinguish true fashionistas (p.s i write this while i munch down rocky road)or may its a little shove in the right direction (maybe that one teaspoon top is sublimely telling me to put down the rocky road) Anyway even if i did have rock hard abs, i think stomach exposing should be left to the beach. Midriff tops bring back bad 90′s memories, and i dont think anyone is ready to relive them yet.

On a positive note, to rock this cute trend without feeling the need to sing a Spice Girls tune, turn those midriffs baring tee’s into a layering effect. Try a cute tight singlet singlet in a bright hue with a contrasting tee. Or if you are one of the lucky washboard girls (kudos for self control) try a midriff top with a long sari or sarong, for a reall bollywood feel this summer. This look only works around beach culture (I live on the Gold Coast) but done right it looks so natural and free.

I had a hard time finding pictures to accompany this article, due to the fresh nature of the trend, and the fact most people are covering their eyes are pretending its not there. This American Apparel tee I found (top of the article) is ultra cute and she looks so chic, but besides the beach, or at the most a picnic on the beach I don’t know where I would wear it. Lindsey Lohan was snapped a few weeks ago in this bold horizontal striped cropped tee. I think she looks great, but she has the money for a personal trainer and probably has never touched a chocolate bar.

The verdict, embrace cropped tee’s how you feel comfortable, because their are more ways then one. Think of them as an accessory, not the main part of your clothing. Or put down the Rocky Road.

I only have 4 weeks left of uni today, argh so excited. That also means i wont be so slack and miss a weeks post again.

    thanks for your comment!
i like your writing style too, it’s very funny.. i was laughing at the bit where you said ‘for those of us who chose tortellini over the gym’… *sigh* stupid pasta, now i can’t wear midriff tops!

i saw heaps of these on runways this season, proenza schouler and the wangster and now topshop is stocking a few… i agree that it can look great if you’re comfortable with it, but it sort of screams of exclusivity to me. I know that that’s what fashion is all about, being exclusive, but still… Anyone can wear some of the trends to come of the SS09 runways (sheer, hats, earrings, jersey, layers, dainty) but it takes a certain person to wear a stomach bearing crop top.

thanks again for the comment, do you want to link swap?

and good luck with the end of uni! i just finished school, and i was insanely excited… and now its the HSC which is a bit of a bummer. but soon i will be free! (until march and uni starts)…

Oh i WISH i could pull off the cropped top look. I believe we’ll be seeing a tonne of teeny-boppers parading their enviously smooth ‘stomachs’ and that sight will make me sad :( Despite the fact i’m sortof a tenny=bopper myself :( Biased or what? lol.

    i like that trend !! it’s hot !

  6. Heaven’s to Betsty!! No, no midriff tops please. I, like some other mortals, chose tortellini over gym torture. My abs are not so much made of steel but more made of flour and water.;-)

Thanks so much for visiting my blog and for the lovely orangey comment!!

i kinda understand what your trying to say, but i actually like the midriff top, but i don’t really wear it like in the picture, i usually wear it over a dress or something like that.. it all comes to how you wear something.. i wouldn’t be comfortable with showing my belly either..

I would happily wear a crop top, I love them, but it’s a bit cold in London.

Ooo, I’ve been thinking about this look, and haven’t attempted yet (a little terrifying, thank goodness it hasn’t yet emerged here yet!), but I picture high-waisted shorts or jeans with a loose top coming just to the waistband, so it just shows a little upper-abs when you move…

haha i think i have that issue of cosmo, with kerr on the cover. i think insight or something had a really cute cropped top. i find it sweet if dressed well..hopefully not trashy haha x

I like cropped tee’s with a high-waisted skirt and barely showing any skin. I really don’t like the way lilo did it

lindsay actually just looks odd. i think over a body con dress it could look hot and maybe with a high waisted skirt so not heaps is showing. it just reminds me of a french vogue cover [i think] with paris hilton on the cover and she had underboob showing. awkard. and mmm tortellini, and now i want rocky road haha
